Dr. Michael Craig is a neurosurgeon with advanced fellowship training in complex spine surgery, based in New Westminster, British Columbia. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Dalhousie University before completing his Neurosurgery Residency at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital. He then pursued advanced spine fellowship training at the University of Calgary and Foothills Medical Centre, where he gained expertise in both traditional and minimally invasive spinal procedures.
Dr. Craig’s practice focuses on treating routine and complex spinal conditions, with particular expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery, including spinal fusion when appropriate. His procedures include minimally invasive lumbar discectomy, lumbar laminectomy, and cervical foraminotomy, as well as cervical disc replacement and anterior cervical fusion in suitable patients. He also maintains a general neurosurgical practice within Fraser Health, caring for patients with spinal tumours, spinal deformity, spinal trauma, and other neurosurgical conditions.
Dr. Craig holds an academic appointment with the Division of Neurosurgery in the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine, where he contributes to the education of medical students and residents. His research includes work on spinal conditions such as degenerative cervical myelopathy, with publications in neurosurgical and spine journals. He has also published research on the use of telehealth for elective spine care.
Dr. Craig takes a patient-centred approach, tailoring treatment options to each patient’s needs and functional goals. When surgery is appropriate, he favours minimally invasive techniques designed to reduce incision size, tissue disruption, and postoperative pain.
