About Dr. Michael Spiess
Dr. Michael Spiess is a Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon who completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the University of Calgary in 2007, and then went on to successfully complete his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of Saskatchewan from 2007 to 2012. Then, from 2012-2013, he pursued advanced training in Adult Spine Surgery through a Combined Orthopaedic/Neurosurgery Spine Fellowship at the University of Calgary.
Since that time, Dr. Spiess has practiced in Saskatoon, SK, and dedicated his practice solely to complex adult spine surgery with extensive experience in degenerative, deformity, trauma, tumor, and minimally-invasive surgery at all levels of the spine. As Medical Director of the Saskatchewan Surgicentre Inc., he has played a pivotal role in pioneering a variety of outpatient spine surgeries at this fully accredited Non-Hospital Treatment Facility, including anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF), cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA), and decompressions in the cervical and lumbar spine. Within the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, he serves as the Spine Section Head and is a member of the Executive Committee. In addition to his clinical excellence, Dr. Spiess continues to be involved in research through peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and educational videos. He is involved with the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network (CSORN) and is actively engaged with Residents on a variety of ongoing studies.
